"City” is a bit of a misnomer for this gold rush town at the confluence of the
Klondike and Yukon Rivers with dirt roads and an old time pioneer
feel!
It is where the first gold nugget was found that started the
Gold Rush in 1896. Four people actually found it but the American got to stake
the claim because the others were native Indians and not considered Canadian
citizens! I guess it was a moot point because money wasn’t part of their culture back then but, it would probably would be now!
We did a walking tour last night with a guide from the Visitor
Center. It was really interesting to hear the history of the town and funny
stories about some of the citizens.
The town is crowded this week-end because June 21 is “Summer
Solstice” – the longest day of the year. The sun sets at approximately 2am and
rises again shortly thereafter. The golf course has a Midnight Sun tournament
on Saturday night.
The Dome is a high mountain in the area where you can see the
sun set/rise. Apparently, there is a big drinking party there all night long on
June 21 – they are all glad for summer!
You can see the distinction between the clear Klondike River and
the muddy Yukon River as they merge here in Dawson City.
“VAST WILDERNESS” is the only way to describe this country. It
looks like a thick, dark green shag carpet for miles, and miles, and miles!
Every color of green you can imagine. It would make a tricky jigsaw
puzzle!
Housing and services here are pretty basic and mining and
tourism are the primary businesses. The year long population is around
1,100.
We ate at Klondike Kate’s in honor of Mom – been thinking of
her. Both she and Izetta were born in June and died in June.
We went to Diamond Tooth Gertie’s Casino last night and saw the
can-can show. When in Rome…..
