On our way into Loreto, along the Sea of Cortez.
Dorothy and I joined the group that drove out to St. Javier
Mission. It was an hour drive through the canyons to this lovely little village
where we toured the church and a small farm and then had lunch.
The church was built in the 1700’s. I bought fresh peas from
the farmer – everything done by manual labor. He has “sweet lemon” trees – the
lemons are very juicy but not sour – actually, not much flavor! He also has
cumquat trees – or something like cumquats – you eat the whole fruit, skin and
all – the skin is the sweet part compared to the sour fruit! The olive tree is over 300 years old, planted by the monks, and they still harvest olives from it!
He sells his
vegetables but makes his real living with his fighting roosters! “Cock”
fighting is not illegal in Mexico and some of his birds are worth $1,000.00 or
more!
Shopping in the town square took us to a hotel that has a
swimming pool on the roof top with a glass bottom that looks down into the
lobby – lovely boutique hotel!
