The Zion Tunnel
You need to drive through a 1.1 mile tunnel in Zion National Park to get to the east side of the canyon and proceed on to Bryce Canyon. If you can't pass through the tunnel it is over 100 miles "around." The published height is 13.1 feet and our motor home measures 13.1 feet high. The rangers stop traffic and allow "big rigs" to travel down the middle of the tunnel which is higher. The ranger on duty when we entered the park sold us a "tunnel pass" and said "big buses and rigs go through there all the time, you won't have any problem." Roger asked several park rangers about the actual height in the middle of the tunnel and always got the standard published response "13.1." He was not about to take a chance until someone knowledgeable told him the actual height! Finally, he went to the visitor's center and asked the ranger to call "dispatch" and ask an expert! Answer - 15 feet! It was a "go." I followed in the car and tried to take pictures. Unfortunately, the front window was dirty!
