Bridges of Madison County

July 10, 2008

We traveled through a portion of the "bread basket of America" - huge fields of corn and soy beans - and not much else. Staying at a lovely little city park in Winterset, Iowa - birthplace of John Wayne and home of the Bridges of Madison County. Lush green grass all around us - had to walk barefoot in it! Toured the town on our bikes, many beautiful, big, restored old homes, and had breakfast with the locals at "Expresso Yourself" coffee shop. Drove to see all 5 remaining covered bridges - a step back in time. The townspeople say it was pretty exciting when they filmed the movie here - Clint and Merryl were gracious to the locals. Darn near killed ourselves bicycling to "Clark Tower" last night. We'll get in better shape someday. Ended up staying an extra day here to avoid thunderstorms in Minneapolis. After our scare at Beaver Lake we are not taking any chances! There is a group of FMCA members here that are also going to the rally. They left today to go to the "Spam Museum" - may regret missing that opportunity!

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly:

Missing the garbage disposal more than the dishwasher

Not wearing a watch

"Reconnecting" with each other - we really are good friends!

Cooking (I should say burning) on gas - have had on electric stove all may life

This is a great site - and It's nice to hear from you on a regular basis and telling us what you did and where - much eaiser then trying to remember all the places you visited when you do have a chance to tell us in person back home.

Great to live vicariously with you. We can almost feel that cold, cold water at Beaver Lake.

Of the four Presidential libraries that we have visited, we always thought that the Truman Library was the most "realistic" in befitting the man that occupied it.

Are you headed up through Minnesota to the UP? If so we want to hear about who assists who thru the MSP Interstate challenge.

We are looking forward to your next installment!

Continued Godspeed to you two!
